Requiem for the Living

We open our 48th season with a contemplative concert featuring expressive chorus and orchestra works by contemporary American composers Paul Moravec and Dan Forrest. Paul Moravec’s “Songs of Love and War” is a setting of letters to and from American servicemen from the Vietnam War, World War II, World War I and the American Civil War. Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living,” unlike traditional Requiems, focuses more on humanity and is just as much for the living and their own struggle with pain and sorrow as for the dead. It was recently featured at a Tokyo concert commemorating the 70th anniversary of Japan’s surrender ending WW II. Our hope with these concerts, in a time of great conflict throughout the world, is to create a brief respite for our audiences to experience the power and beauty of this music and its comment on our shared, human experience.
