As one of the largest bodies of American folk music to endure into the twenty-first century, African American Spirituals bear witness to the complexity and contradictions of our nation’s history while giving voice to universal experiences of hope, resilience, justice, freedom, and spiritual longing. Their messages continue to resonate across generations, inspiring composers and performers around the world.
We are honored to welcome acclaimed guest soloist Alfrelynn Roberts, Artistic Director of Portland Opera, whose distinguished career includes performances with the internationally renowned Moses Hogan Singers. Together, we will explore this rich and enduring musical tradition through historical and contemporary Spirituals, alongside choral works they have inspired, celebrating a musical legacy that remains central to the story of American music.
Please join us after the Saturday evening concert for a special wine-tasting fundraiser.
