Join us for an evening of inspiring words and music, featuring Margaret Bonds’ Credo, a powerful setting of the prose poetry of Black activist W.E.B. Du Bois. The influential poems of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes are featured in settings by Rosephanye Powell and Jazz great Dave Brubeck. Additional music includes a moving re-imaging of We Shall Overcome by Robert T. Gibson, the Gospel-influenced Stick with Love by Aaron Manswell, featuring the words of Martin Luther King, I will Sing of Life by the legendary Adolphus Hailstork, and A Vision Unfolding, a jaw-dropping, original choral work by Derrick Skye that speaks to the fundamental truths of being human.

We have all heard the famous words of Martin Luther King that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Yes, the arc does bend, but not without great effort and faith in the possibility of building a better world, however long it takes. Thankfully, the composers and writers who created this concert’s music have given all of us powerful and beautiful inspiration to continue the struggle until all are free. It has been our honor to engage with these texts through the brilliant musical settings you will hear, and we offer them with respect for both the contexts in which many of them were written, and awareness of their continued relevance today.
