Continuing our long-running collaboration with Cascadia Composers, the Northwest chapter of the National Association of Composers, USA, we are proud to present Yuletide: From the Pacific Northwest in December at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church.   These concerts feature a special focus on seasonal music by local and regional composers, including world premiere performances, along with traditional carols and treasured choral classics to celebrate the season.

Our Entire Choral Music Season

The Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland is excited to announce our 2023-2024 concert season. Now in our 55th year, we present a season of powerful voices – from the moving words of Anne Frank’s remarkable diary, to the important works of our own Pacific Northwest composers to the magnificence of Beethoven. This season will also see us perform twice at the new Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in the heart of Beaverton. We look forward to welcoming you to our concerts this season. Please note that because tickets for all Reser concerts are handled by their box office, we are unable to offer season tickets for the 2023-2024 season.

“Annelies” brings to life the diary written by Anne Frank and has been described as “woundingly beautiful” (The Daily Telegraph). Set to music by English composer James Whitbourn, it takes the teenager’s remarkable and penetrating observations, written whilst hiding in an Amsterdam attic, as the basis of its extraordinary and moving libretto. Whitbourn reflects sounds of the Westerkerk bells and tunes heard on the radio in the Annexe, along with representations of Anne Frank’s Jewish and German heritage, details that add to a score “whose respectful understatement is its greatest strength” (The Times). Set for chorus, soprano soloists and chamber ensemble, this dramatic, powerful and moving work is not to be missed. We are excited to present these concerts at The Reser.

To kick off the new year, we present Beethoven’s colossal Mass in C Major, op. 86 with Sunnyside Symphony Orchestra.  Inhabiting the dramatic world of the symphony, this beautiful Mass setting is one of the most significant works in the choral repertoire. The work’s grandeur, power, and spiritual depth make it an enduring masterpiece that continues to inspire and move audiences. We are excited to return to The Reser to present one of Beethoven’s greatest works for chorus and orchestra.

Finally, we conclude our season at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church with Northwest Voices. In our continued mission to give voice to local and regional composers, we once again partner with Cascadia Composers. These concerts will showcase works by local and regional artists, including Northwest native Morten Lauridsen’s complete Madrigali: Six ‘Fire Songs’ on Italian Renaissance Poems.  We hope you will join us for a wine-tasting fundraiser on the St. Philip Neri campus after the Saturday evening concert.
