Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland’s 58th season celebrates the many ways we are connected—to the natural world, to the joy and hope of the holiday season, to those we love and remember, and to the complex histories that continue to shape our lives. Through music that invites both reflection and discovery, this season explores our shared humanity with curiosity, compassion, and wonder. We invite you to join us for four inspiring programs that illuminate our connections to history, to one another, and to the world around us.

Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland opens its 58th season with a program that explores our relationship with the natural world and the communities that sustain us. Drawing on the writings of Wendell Berry, John Muir, and other voices who celebrate the beauty and restorative power of nature, Alex Berko’s A Sacred Place bridges the sacred and the secular, the individual and the collective, reminding us of the places that ground and unite us.

Celebrate the beauty and warmth of the holiday season with an evening of beloved and contemporary choral music. At the heart of the program is Sarah Quartel’s A Winter Day, a luminous work that sets texts by Sara Teasdale, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and other writers to evoke the quiet wonder, crisp beauty, and peaceful stillness of winter.

Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland joins Resonance Ensemble and Orchestra Nova Northwest to present Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem, alongside the world premiere of a new work for chorus and orchestra by Portland composer Giancarlo Castro.

As one of the largest bodies of American folk music to endure into the twenty-first century, African American Spirituals bear witness to the complexity and contradictions of our nation’s history while giving voice to universal experiences of hope, resilience, justice, freedom, and spiritual longing. Their messages continue to resonate across generations, inspiring composers and performers around the world.
